Associate Producer

Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) is a multi-disciplinary arts center located in Brooklyn, New York. For more than 150 years, BAM has been the home for adventurous artists, audiences, and ideas—engaging both global and local communities. With world-renowned programming in theater, dance, music, opera, film, and much more, BAM showcases the work of emerging artists and innovative modern masters.

BAM is currently seeking an Associate Producer to facilitate and assist in producing a wide range of BAM’s artistic initiatives, under the direction of the Senior Producer, and in active collaboration with programming staff, curators, artists, external consultants, and BAM departments. The selected candidate will establish and maintain the best possible working environment conducive to the creation of innovative events and productions in multiple artistic genres and venues, and build successful relationships with artists by effectively facilitating their processes of artistic creation.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Take initiative as a full-time member of a highly collaborative team with a shared sense of optimism; must possess confidence and capability to attend and run meetings, and must contribute ideas and propose solutions to challenges.
  • Communicate to artists and their representatives BAM’s expectations, schedules, deadlines, resources, and working practices to further the successful completion of their work within the context of BAM.  Function as a liaison between BAM and the artists.
  • Support the senior producer in ensuring smooth and dynamic execution of productions on the BAM campus and off-site.
  • Lead on producing certain events and productions as assigned.
  • Attend performances as required.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • 5 years experience required in theater, music, dance, performance art and/or festival performances, projects, events, concerts, and happenings
  • Experienced in DEI concepts, programs, and initiatives.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability working with artists on the development of performances at a high artistic level
  • Experience working with production and technical personnel
  • Experience producing large scale projects including site-specific work
  • Excellent computer skills working with Microsoft Suites and the internet
  • Ability to read and understand budgets; familiarity with financial forms
  • Knowledge of history and artists of BAM’s programming
  • Administrative work experience in a diverse performing arts environment
  • Understanding of theater and dance production, including a thorough understanding of what it takes to put it all together (including budgets, fundraising, marketing, touring, etc.)
  • Ability to be clear in communicating, and when dealing with people for whom English is not a primary language
  • Ability to be calm and responsive in difficult and urgent situations
  • Ability to make decisions and solve problems
  • Ability to foster consensus-building teams
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Ability to meet deadlines and respond to changes in direction and circumstance
  • Entrepreneurial spirit
  • Some travel is necessary to attend performances and artistic planning meetings. 
  • Availability to work required evening & weekend programs.
  • Must have the ability to comply with NYC COVID-19 vaccination mandate

Preferred Qualifications

  • Multilingual
  • Understanding of union agreements (AEA, USA, SDC, etc.)
  • Relationships with other local, national, and international cultural organizations and agencies
  • An avid interest in artists and how successive artistic projects are created
  • Devoted attention to the surrounding community
  • Prior touring experience and work with international venues
  • Looking for a person who is mindful of a myriad of details while demonstrating the ability to maintain focus on “the big picture.”
  • Looking for an excellent communicator who can work independently within a large and complex institution, mindful of competing interests, labor union rules, and specific needs of partner organizations.
  • Familiarity with visa process helpful to effectively liaison with artists, Artist Services department, and legal counsel.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to be sedentary. Ability to lift up to 15 pounds. This role will require some movement within the office when we return to in-person operations.

COMPENSATION: Salary will range between $65,000 - $75,000 annually commensurate with years of experience. This position is full-time exempt and eligible for benefits.
