Producer, Performing Arts

BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music) is a multi-disciplinary arts center located in Brooklyn, New York. For more than 150 years, BAM has been the home for adventurous artists, audiences, and ideas—engaging both global and local communities. With world-renowned programming in theater, dance, music, opera, film, and much more, BAM showcases the work of emerging artists and innovative modern masters.

We are searching for a Producer.  This is a newly created position whose role is to produce a full complement of BAM’s artistic initiatives, including DanceAfrica, Theatrical Productions, and other produced projects, under direction of the Artistic Director, and in active collaboration with programming staff, curators, artists, external consultants, and General Management.  The Producer will also establish and maintain the best possible working environment conducive to the creation of innovative new productions in multiple artistic genres and venues, and to build successful relationships with artists by effectively facilitating their processes of artistic creation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • With optimism and good humor, execute and/or advance the institution’s Artistic Director’s vision within budgetary and other parameters set forth by BAM
  • Produce a full complement of artistic initiatives including DanceAfrica (under the leadership of the Artistic Director of DanceAfrica) and other projects, including fully produced theatrical productions, as assigned by BAM’s Artistic Director.  Duties may include but are not limited to:
    • Maintain contacts with local government and cultural agencies in the selected African countries who can help arrange auditions and facilitate introductions with local dance companies
    • Act as the liaison with the visiting companies and/or participating artists and their representatives, and provide accurate information to all aforementioned parties
    • In collaboration with GM, timely negotiation of contract terms, and development of schedules, timetables, program descriptions and other paperwork for both performing and creative artists
    • In collaboration with GM, maintain awareness of and adhere to budgetary and resource parameters for each project
    • Facilitate clear, thorough, and effective communication of information to all BAM departments and its producing partners
    • Oversee the rehearsal process from the rehearsal hall, technical rehearsals, through opening night
    • Provide programming information to Marketing, Publicity, and Development including assets needed for the website, brochure and house program
    • Productively and sensitively support relationships and communication with artists and their representatives to help ensure the best possible artistic outcomes
  • Work with artists, companies, and across all BAM departments to generate and produce artistically successful festivals, projects, and programs
  • Maintain positive and productive relationships with artists so that strategic alliances are formed
  • Maintain clear and timely communication with BAM staff and leadership about significant artistic developments
  • Bring assigned projects to completion by leveraging the resources of many BAM departments, including artist services (visas & travel), general management (budgets, contracts, and operations), communications (marketing and publicity), and the education and community engagement departments.
  • Significantly contribute to an institutional culture of mutual respect, risk-taking, personal accountability, and creativity
  • Attend meetings, and on occasion run meetings, on behalf of Artistic Director; contribute ideas and propose solutions to programming conundrums, relating particularly to social, demographic and geographic diversity
Minimum Qualifications
  • 5-10 years’ experience required in producing theater, music, dance, performance art and/or festival performances, projects, events, concerts, and happenings
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability working with artists on the development of performances at a high artistic level
  • Experience working with production and technical personnel
  • Experience producing large scale projects including site-specific work
  • Excellent computer skills working with Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and the internet
  • Ability to read and understand budgets; familiarity with financial paperwork
  • Knowledge of history and artists of BAM’s programming, particularly of DanceAfrica
  • Ability to meet deadlines and respond to changes in direction and circumstance
  • Prior touring experience and work with international venues
  • Understanding of union agreements (AEA, USA, SDC, etc.)
  • Understanding of theater and dance production, including a thorough understanding of what it takes to put it all together (including budgets, fundraising, marketing, touring, etc.)
  • Ability to be clear in communicating, and when dealing with people for whom English is not a primary language
  • Some travel is necessary to attend performances and artistic planning meetings.
  • Regular evening & weekend work is required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Multilingual
  • Knowledge of traditional and contemporary African and African Diaspora dance 
  • Relationships with other local, national, and international cultural organizations and agencies
  • Avid interest in artists and how successive artistic projects are created
  • Devoted attention to the marketplace and the surrounding community
  • Ability to be mindful of a myriad of details while demonstrating the ability to maintain focus on “the big picture.”
  • Previous experience with the visa application process
  • Entrepreneurial spirit
  • Ability to be calm and responsive in difficult and urgent situations
  • Ability to make decisions and solve problems
  • Ability to foster consensus-building teams
