Maintenance Supervisor

Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) is a multi-disciplinary arts center located in Brooklyn, New York. With world-renowned programming in theater, dance, music, opera, film, and much more, BAM showcases the work of emerging artists and innovative modern masters.


We are seeking a Maintenance Supervisor to oversee and coordinate the facilities team who maintain and repair HVAC, mechanical, plumbing, electrical and carpentry systems throughout the BAM campus.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities of the Maintenance Supervisor:

  • Supervises maintenance staff, responds to emergency conditions and ensures a clean, safe and secure environment.
  • Inspects facilities regularly to determine problems and necessary maintenance to insure the proper workings of the plumbing, HVAC, electrical, carpentry, and mechanical systems.
  • Develops preventive maintenance schedules and holds responsibility for their implementation.
  • Repairs and maintains all building systems in accordance with Federal, State, and Local codes, and regulations.
  • Prepares weekly maintenance schedules and allocates work to ensure good working conditions.
  • Submits reports and maintenance staff time sheets to management.
  • Trouble shoots and monitors controls though BMS and at equipment sites.
  • Makes recommendations as to the reduction of costs in operating the HVAC, plumbing, electrical (as allowed by code).
  • Oversees in-house projects such as carpentry, plumbing, painting, HVAC.
  • Maintains records of work completed, and notes time and materials used.
  • Oversees and inspects work in progress of maintenance staff.
  • Assists in hiring outside contractors, as needed.
  • Works with contractors and engineers and oversee projects to ensure that they are done at reasonable time and to specifications.
  • Meets outside contractors at location upon commencement of work and monitor progress and workmanship of job.
  • Generates requisitions for supplies and material necessary to the operation of assigned locations.
  • Receives materials and documents in accordance with established procedure.
  • Assists in preparation of the annual operating budget by supplying information on repairs and improvements required at various locations.
  • Attends to small scale repairs to building structures, ceiling repair, floor repair, wall repair, minor caulking, windows, etc.
  • Repairs minor furniture, cabinet or office built-ins.
  • Attends meetings as requested.

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of three (3) years related experience including Supervisory responsibility.
  • Strong technical knowledge of building maintenance/systems and architectural drawings as normally acquired by the completion of related Vocational Training Program, required.
  • Knowledge of health and safety practices and regulations.
  • Ability to properly and safely utilize all equipment and follow safety procedures prior to using this equipment.
  • Maintains current knowledge of new products, equipment and methods relating to his field.
  • Experience with Microsoft Suites (Outlook, Word, Excel)

The Maintenance Supervisor will accept training for computerized climate control system and any/all equipment for which BAM provides training for. To maintain position, the Maintenance Supervisor must be willing to secure and maintain all necessary licenses and certificates listed below required by New York State, New York City, and the Brooklyn Academy of Music:

Professional Certifications:

  • CMRP (Certified Maintenance and Reliability Professional)
  • HVAC (Heating Ventilation Air Condition Certification)
  • P-99 (Low Pressure Oil Burner Certificate)
  • FDNY RSOE-Q99 (Refrigerating System Operating Engineer)
  • F.L.S.D. (Fire Life Safety Director Certificate)
  • S-12 (Certificate of Fitness for Sprinkler System)
  • S-13 (Certificate of Fitness for Standpipe System)

Physical Requirements- The qualified candidate must be willing to work any shifts as may be required. In an emergency situation, the Maintenance Supervisor is identified as an essential worker and overtime or overnight shifts may be required. The Maintenance Supervisor will be required to climb on, or work from ladders, scaffolding, and other lift equipment. The person will be required to lift, and/or transport heavy spare parts or equipment.

Pay: The role is a Union position, and will be paid in accordance with the DC 37 citywide economic agreement. This position is full-time non-exempt and eligible for benefits.
