Director of Strategic Partnerships & Sponsorships

Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) is a multi-disciplinary arts center located in Brooklyn, New York. For more than 150 years, BAM has been the home for adventurous artists, audiences, and ideasóengaging both global and local communities. With world-renowned programming in theater, dance, music, opera, film, and much more, BAM showcases the work of emerging artists and innovative modern masters.

BAM is currently seeking a Director of Strategic Partnerships & Sponsorships to effectively lead and direct all aspects BAMís Sponsorship Department in order to meet or exceed BAM's annual corporate fundraising goal of approximately $3.5MM (pre-COVID).  The Director will seek solutions and results that create a high-performing work environment and increase income from corporations.  By reading situations strategically and efficiently, the qualified candidate will be able to effectively build success for the sponsorship department, and BAM at-large.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities for the Director of Strategic Partnerships & Sponsorships

  • Lead all aspects of a $3.5 annual department goal as part of BAMís overall Development division goal of $30 million by generating funds from marketing areas of corporate sectors for general operation, program restricted support, in-kind, and special events underwriting, and galas.

o Meet or exceed annual corporate goal

o Work in conjunction with Special Events Director on generating special events underwriting and gala income

  • Collaborate with the executive staff and develop strategic plans across multiple departments to improve business processes.
  • Develop the funding pipeline and create a record of success in securing new partnerships

Managing Proposal Requests:

  • Strategize all renewal and new proposals and requests for the department
  • Oversee the creation of all proposals, reports and contract agreements
  • Attend off-site meetings with corporate partners to present sponsorship partnership request
  • Identify and cultivate new sources of funding

Managing Sponsor Relationship:

  • Negotiate and manage all sponsorship contracts, with deliverables such as credits, print ad placement, on-site signage, promotion, tickets, and hospitality
  • Maintain communication with corporate partners via e-mail, phone, or mail for benefit fulfillment, set up meetings, follow up on request, follow up on status of proposal, agreement, and money
  • Oversee and approve BAMís Corporate Sponsors crediting
  • Oversee updates of Sponsorship contacts and plans in Tessitura
  • Attend special events, galas, dinners, and events to greet guests, manage benefits, prospect
  • Edit all acknowledgement letters to corporate funders created by Coordinator

Managing Department:

  • Supervise Senior Manager, Coordinator to achieve the key result areas mentioned above
  • Run weekly meetings with staff by reviewing timeline and agenda together
  • Hire and develop new staff and continue to train current staff
  • Create and manage timeline and agenda for the Sponsorship department
  • Create sponsorship projections via Tessitura for each fiscal year & review and revise Sponsorship projections via on a monthly
  • Approve all gift coding forms to be submitted to Fiscal department
  • Monitor and track department expense budget

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • 7+ years demonstrated experience in corporate fundraising and/or sponsorship and/or sales, performing arts experience a plus
  • Ability to develop and strategize sponsorship requests
  • Exemplary proposal writing and editing skillsóboth sponsorship requests and performing arts grants.
  • Experience as a supervisor
  • Demonstrated track record of pitching and closing new corporate partnerships
  • Ability to maintain effective relations with donors and prospects
  • Attention to the finest detail
  • Ability to delegate, prioritize, and manage many tasks
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Experience in managing income and expense budgets
  • Experience in managing administrative duties of the office (keeping track of files, database, supplies, etc.)
  • Ability to inspire, coach, train, and develop other staff members to drive for results in overall fundraising goal.
  • Lead the Strategic Partnerships & Sponsorship team by example, finding solutions to create and maintain a high level of sponsor satisfaction.


Compensation: Salary commensurate with experience. This position is full-time exempt and BAM offers a full benefits package including medical, dental and vision care, employer-paid life insurance and pension.
