Human Resources Generalist

Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) is a multi-disciplinary arts center located in Brooklyn, New York. For more than 150 years, BAM has been the home for adventurous artists, audiences, and ideasóengaging both global and local communities. With world-renowned programming in theater, dance, music, opera, film, and much more, BAM showcases the work of emerging artists and innovative modern masters.

BAM is currently seeking a Human Resource Generalist to Coordinate all HRIS (Paycom) operations and data and assist in recruitment coordination. Successful candidate will ensure data integrity of the HRIS and HR files while extracting, reporting on and organizing data as needed. The qualified candidate must have the  ability to perform general human resources duties including responding to employee relations concerns while communicating HR policies, coordinating recruitment efforts and assisting the Director of HR with staff training and development efforts.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities for the Human Resource Generalist 

Generalist Duties

  • Provide timely and thoughtful support to employees in response to daily HR inquiries.
  • Help craft and deliver HR communications.
  • Ad hoc employee relations and performance management issues.
  • Communicates and interprets HR policies and procedures while providing remedies for any employee relations issues that may arise.
  • Partner with the HR team and leadership to drive company culture, support retention and ensure a fulfilling employee experience.
  • Respond and provide employment verification as needed

Employee Relations

  • Act as first line employee relations contact by building trusted work relationships with all levels of employees, by talking to them and soliciting feedback. Troubleshoot issues employees have with benefits/payroll. Promote confidential relationships with all employees.
  • Work with Benefits Manager to search continuously for new ideas, products, and services that will benefit employees, i.e. gym memberships, yoga instructors/massage therapists.
  • Prepare and administer employee communications (visual and verbal) regarding compensation, benefits, and other compensatory programs, i.e. 401(k) sessions, health fairs.
  • Advise, communicate and explain information to employees and managers on new policies, procedures and benefits.

Training & Development

  • Assist Director of Human Resources with training development and implementation.
  • Responsible for tracking training and development programs for all employees.
  • Assist and ensure yearly training needs are fulfilled: performance management, sexual harassment, etc. as needed.

  • Maintain communications such as BAM social network and newsletters to ensure employees have knowledge of staff events and general information.
  • Ensure new hires receive necessary information in order to be successful at BAM. Coordinate BAM-wide skills & knowledge training (e.g. new hire orientation, yammer, artsvision, tessitura, UltiPro, BAM values, hospitality, building tours, lunch & learns, follow-the-production)

HRIS Management

  • Develops, optimizes and maintains BAMís HRIS
  • Creates and supports a variety of reports utilizing the appropriate tools, automating where possible
  • Research and propose new uses of Paycom to the HR team
  • Act as first point of contact for the Paycom account representative
  • Organize and champion the HR teamís requests or concerns to Paycom
  • Coordinate the time management portion of the weekly payroll process
  • Responds to employee questions about HRIS data (i.e. time off accruals)
  • Train employees on HRIS best practices
  • Assist employees with HRIS use including password reset requests
  • Processes personnel changes
  • Troubleshoots bugs/errors in HRIS

Recruitment Coordination

  • Onboard new employees with focus on compliance and benefits
  • Ad hoc recruitment projects

Required Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Four years of human resources, employee relation experience, 
  • Extensive and advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel and other business intelligence reporting tools.
  • Excellent computer skills in Outlook, Word and PowerPoint
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Some proficiency with mathematical formulas and budgets
  • Experience with an HRIS, preferably Paycom
  • High level of confidentiality
  • Ability to multi-task and interact in a friendly and professional manner
  • Ability to demonstrate patience
  • Team player, customer service oriented
  • Resourceful and motivated
  • Highly organized and detail oriented
  • Proactive problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work remotely

Compensation: Salary commensurate with experience. This position is full-time non-exempt and BAM offers a full benefits package including medical, dental and vision care, employer-paid life insurance and pension.
