Associate Director, Development Operations

Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) is a multi-disciplinary arts center located in Brooklyn, New York. For more than 150 years, BAM has been the home for adventurous artists, audiences, and ideas—engaging both global and local communities. With world-renowned programming in theater, dance, music, opera, film, and much more, BAM showcases the work of emerging artists and innovative modern masters.

The Associate Director, Development Operations works directly with BAM’s Finance Department to process contributions, ensuring acknowledgments and receipts for all gifts are sent out accurately, efficiently, and in a timely manner. In addition, they oversee the tracking, management, and reconciliation of all Development Division budgets, track and report on KPIs for the department, and assist the Director of Individual Giving and Development Operations with the project management of ongoing fundraising efforts and strategies. This position has two direct reports: Development Operations Coordinator, Development Operations Manager.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Primary Development Division liaison with the Finance Department.
  • Oversee Development gift processing, acknowledgments, and receipting, ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and timely delivery to donors.
  • Serve as the primary Development division liaison and the Finance Department.
  • Build, track and reconcile all Development Division expense budgets, including Major Gifts, Individual Giving (Membership & Patron Program), Development Operations, Institutional Giving, Corporate Sponsorship, and Special Events—pinpoint areas for efficiency and opportunities.
  • Build track and reconcile Development Division program budgets, including BAMTravel (~1-2 trips per year), Gala, Art Auction, and Visual Art fundraising.
  • Carry out credit card reconciliation and process invoices and payments for the division.
  • Liaise with BAM’s Analytics & Insights team to request and receive analysis and customized business reporting tools, and manage a collection of existing tools, including interactive Power BI dashboards and various scheduled reports.
  • As a “power user” of this analysis and reporting, the Manager will be charged with providing strategic guidance to the Division, highlighting and focusing attention on key insights.
  • Assists the Director of Individual Giving and Development Operations with ongoing project management for fundraising efforts and strategies.
  • Manage and support the Development Operations Manager and Development Operations Coordinator.
  • Provide intra-departmental support as necessary, particularly during institution-wide, individual-based cultivation events and stewarding opportunities
  • Staff Patron Lounge and Patron Table as needed

 

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in project management and/or data stewardship in marketing, fundraising, or related industries; previous work experience in the performing arts or other non-profit organization preferred.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills
  • Strong analytical skills with experience using Excel and data visualization tools 
  • Ability to translate complex data into digestible insights and communicate this to stakeholders 
  • Exchange ideas, information, and opinions with others to formulate policies and programs and/or arrive jointly at decisions, conclusions, or solutions
  • Possess excellent interpersonal skills
  • Possess effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey information and a clear and concise manner; strong attention to detail
  • Think creatively and contribute to project success
  • Successfully manage a variety of tasks within a tight time schedule
  • Demonstrate strong initiative and ability to work independently with minimal oversight
  • Database knowledge (Tessitura or other fundraising databases a plus)
  • Must be able to work occasional evening and weekend hours for Development events

  • Must have the ability to comply with NYC COVID-19 vaccination mandate 

 

Compensation: The salary range for this position is $70k-80k per year. The role is represented by Local 2110 and will be paid in accordance with the BAM/UAW Local 2110 Collective Bargaining Agreement. This position is full-time, exempt, and eligible for benefits.
