Assistant Manager, Cinema

Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) is a multi-disciplinary arts center located in Brooklyn, New York. For more than 150 years, BAM has been the home for adventurous artists, audiences, and ideas—engaging both global and local communities. With world-renowned programming in theater, dance, music, opera, film, and much more, BAM showcases the work of emerging artists and innovative modern masters.

An ideal Assistant Manager would work closely with the Cinema Management Team and Projectionists to operate a busy and dynamic four-screen cinema in Downtown Brooklyn. The Assistant Manager would oversee the Floor Staff and handle all operations within the cinema, from box office and concession sales to customer service.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

With assistance from the Cinema Management Team an Assistant Manager will be responsible for learning and administering the following duties:

  • Ability to train, develop, coach, and supervise non-management team members. 
  • Understanding of counting, logging, and reconciling cash and credit card sales through the Point-of-Sale (POS) system for use at the cinema box office and concession stand. 
  • Learn facets of the position including, concession and box office operations, supervising floor staff, and managing cash and credit card sales.
  • Prepares reports analyzing sales and data for film distributors
  • Coordinate with other departments (Membership, Special Events, etc.) to ensure that cinema operations are run efficiently and effectively.
  • Oversee and assist in the operations of Q&A’s and Special Events
  • Display a hospitable welcome to all visitors by consistently creating a welcoming environment for guests, anticipating their needs and providing a plus one customer experience. 
  • Communicate clearly and effectively to customers questions on, directions, programming, local suggestions.
  • Maintain the daily upkeep of the Cinema space during operations (theaters, workspace, lobby).
  • Work within a team environment and take direction from Cinema Manager.
  • Uphold and administer all BAM policies.

Required Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Suite, Google Drive, and Point of Sales (POS) Systems 
  • Ability to efficiently perform calculations with speed and accuracy, while identifying and correcting errors
  • Possess good communication skills both verbally and in writing form with employees, vendors, and visitors. 
  • Must be able to listen effectively and successfully solve employee and visitor problems.
  • Ability to provide friendly and polite customer service
  • Availability to work holidays, evenings, and weekends
  • Ability to climb stairs and stand throughout performances; must be able to lift boxes up to 15lbs.
  • Experience working at a movie theater is preferable .
  • Applicant must have the ability to obtain Fire Guard and Food Handler certificates after being hired (BAM will facilitate this).
  • Team lead experience required. 
  • Experience working in hospitality (i.e. movie theaters, restaurants, and/or retail) preferred. 
  • Qualified candidate must have the ability to complete Fire Guard and Food Handler certificates after being hired (BAM will facilitate this)

Working conditions:

  • This role is on-site and cannot be conducted remotely.
  • Requires the ability to climb stairs, stand for long periods of time, and lift/carry objects of 10-15 lbs.

Compensation: $45,588.00 will be paid in accordance with the UAW 2110 Collective  Bargaining Agreement. This union position is full-time non-exempt and eligible for benefits.

Schedule: Cinema staff are expected to work during BAM Cinema Rose peak operation times (e.g., nights, weekends, holidays, etc.) and will generally be required to be available during these periods. Qualified candidates must be available to work 40 hours per week. (Cinema operating hours are 3 pm -12 am Monday-Thursday, and Noon to 12am on Friday-Sunday).
