Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) is a multi-disciplinary arts center located in Brooklyn, New York. For more than 150 years, BAM has been the home for adventurous artists, audiences, and ideas, engaging global and local communities. With world-renowned programming in theater, dance, music, opera, film, and much more, BAM showcases the work of emerging artists and innovative modern masters.   

BAM seeks a highly qualified and experienced Arts and Academic Pathways Instructor and Curator for our Brooklyn Interns for Arts and Culture (BIAC) program for high school seniors interested in exploring academic and career experiences in the performing, visual, administrative, and liberal arts.

The instructor will support students in their college application processes, introduce them to myriad artistic careers and institutions, support students in the scholarship and financial aid process, execute teen-related events for our annual DanceAfrica festival, and curate teen-centered social outings and events for students to build community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

• Facilitate college and career-related workshops for twelve high school seniors seeking academic and professional development in the arts
• Support students with the college application process, including the following: the scholarship and financial aid process, and resume, cover letter, and college personal statement development
• Facilitate event planning workshops for twelve high school seniors in lieu of their final internship project (a teen-related event to be held during our DanceAfrica festival)
• Co-coordinate a graduation/culminating event for twelve high school interns in early June with BAM Education administrative staff
• Participate in multi-day curriculum development meetings with colleagues to create lesson plans that support participants’ acquisition of college application processes
• Meet weekly with colleagues for curriculum planning and support purposes
• Meet weekly with a wellness consultant to scaffold mental health best practices into lesson plan
• Support the development and analysis of relevant evaluation tools and methods for participants to inform future program development
• Attend relevant BAM performances
• Support the planning and coordination of culminating student events
• Attend Teaching Artist gather sessions, professional development, and other various meetings

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• At least two to three years of experience instructing or advising high school students with proven career expertise in secondary education and youth development, including experience with career coaching and expansive knowledge of the college admissions process. 
• Strong verbal and written interpersonal, communication, public speaking, and customer service skills  
• Demonstrated history of building positive, collaborative working relationships with colleagues, parents, artists, professionals, and a diverse range of young people
• Experience developing curriculum and lesson plans  
• Experience working with diverse youth populations across identities; english language learners, students with individual learning plans, and students with disabilities 
• Awareness of youth developmental stages and current youth and social issues
• Commitment to ongoing growth and refinement of teaching artist skills by participating in appropriate meetings as well as BAM and other professional development opportunities.
• Experience developing, assessing, and evaluating programs
• Comfortability leading discussions, lecture, and chaperoning field trips
• Commitment to fostering a positive work environment  
• Commitment to creating and maintaining an equitable, diverse, and inclusive work environment 
• Comfortable working with DEI concepts, programs, and initiatives 
• Must have the ability to comply with the NYC COVID-19 vaccination mandate 

Preferred Qualifications:

• An arts practitioner who is well-connected with arts institutions and artists in New York City 
• Teaching experience in the arts (previous work in New York City preferred)
• Familiarity with the NYC Blueprint for the Teaching and Learning in the Arts, and the Common Core State Standards

Working Conditions: 

• Ability to work during school and/or after-school hours  

• Teaching and facilitation will occur in traditional (i.e., public school classroom, field trips) and non-traditional learning environments.   

• Meetings and professional development generally occur on the Brooklyn Academy of Music's campus.  

• This is a hybrid role. Duties will be performed in-person and remotely. 

Compensation:  

• TAs will receive $120 per facilitation session. 
• TAs who participate in meetings, curriculum developments, or one-on-one sessions with BAM staff will receive $50 for the first hour and $25 for each additional hour. 
• This position is classified as part-time, seasonal, and non-exempt.
