Associate Vice President, Finance

BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music) is a multi-disciplinary arts center located in Brooklyn, New York. For more than 150 years, BAM has been the home for adventurous artists, audiences, and ideasóengaging both global and local communities. With world-renowned programming in theater, dance, music, opera, film, and much more, BAM showcases the work of emerging artists and innovative modern masters.

We are searching for our Associate Vice President, Finance.  This is a newly created position which will serve as the leader of all strategic and tactical aspects of BAMís finance, accounting, and budget operations.  This position reports to the CFO/Vice President of Finance and Administration. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Ensure BAMís financial stability through continual analysis and evaluation of the overall financial health of the organization with resulting recommendations for improvement being provided to the CFO, President, executive staff and respective Board Committees
  • Develop and implement successful strategies that plan for the growth of BAM
  • Ensure that all financial activities are in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), internal policies, and regulatory requirements

Planning & Control

  • Develop and prepare annual budget in collaboration with the senior management team
  • Provide monthly budget variance analysis to executive staff
  • Develop annual operating cash flow and working capital requirements and revise monthly
  • Coordinate and manage short and long term borrowing
  • Evaluate, maintain and implement new systems to assure the financial integrity and cost controls of the organization, appropriate financial controls and compliance with all governmental and industry standards and guidelines
  • Advise on the impact of long-range planning, introduction of new programs/strategies and regulatory action

Accounting & Financial Reporting

  • Oversee accounting processes including accounts payable and receivables
  • Provide and direct record-keeping procedures and systems with necessary controls
  • Assess financial position and issue monthly internal reports
  • Ensure that the organization is current on all accounting procedures to maintain compliance and anticipate the implications of any accounting rule changes
  • Oversee processing of contributions to BAM and ensure accurate reflection of such in BAMís financial statements
  • Identify ways to improve efficiency in BAMís business processes and implement new processes

Tax and Audit

  • Oversee annual financial audit for BAM and BET
  • Create and manage internal audit function within BAM using existing Finance staff as well as other staff as relevant
  • Oversee annual 990 & 990T tax filings
  • Oversee Federal and other government tax filings and audits

Capital Projects Support

  • Work with CFO and Capital Projects staff to monitor budget status of capital projects.
  • Assist in negotiating government funding agreements for capital projects.
  • Ensure compliance in reporting for any financing obtained for capital projects.

Decision Support

  • Direct all financial activities and provide financial and business leadership that will help to establish priorities, maximize current resources, and ensure that financial plans, systems and controls are consistent with and supportive of BAM's strategic direction
  • Analyze operational issues impacting functional groups and the institution and determine their financial impact
  • Enhance and/or develop, implement and enforce policies and procedures that will improve overall operations and effectiveness
  • Identify areas where use of data could be strengthened to increase efficiency or otherwise yield better, more timely management information (not limited to the Finance area)
  • Represent BAMís current decisions and strategy in both internal and external meetings, filling in for the CFO as required
 
Minimum Qualifications
  • Minimum of 8 yearsí experience in financial management and controls
  • Minimum of 2 yearsí experience working under the supervision of a Certified Public Accountant
  • Minimum of 33 credit hours of relevant accounting courses
  • Knowledge of the not-for-profit environment
  • Proven ability to manage a staff of finance professionals
  • Analytical ability to see the big picture as it relates to financial and business matters
  • Collaborative working style
  • Ability to communicate complex financial information in a clear, concise manner
  • Ability to communicate with entry-level Finance staff as well as Board-level representatives
  • Technical proficiency with finance and accounting systems
  • Exceptional oral, written, presentation, leadership and problem solving skills
  • Impeccable integrity and strong judgment; ability to make decisions among competing priorities under stressful conditions
  • Knowledge of current generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP)
  • Sensitivity to and support of BAMís mission; interest in the arts preferred
Salary: Commensurate with experience.  Comprehensive benefits package including pension.
