Teknopolis Digital Arts Activity Assistants (Temp)

Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) seeks several qualified and experienced Digital Arts Activity Assistants to facilitate interactions between public patrons (children and adults) and the digital arts activities of Teknopolis. Teknopolis is a three (3) weekend interactive exhibit of digital arts, interactive technology, and virtual reality experiences running February 23 through March 10, 2019.

BAM is the United States’ oldest continually operating performing arts center located in Brooklyn, New York. For more than 150 years, BAM has been the home for adventurous artists, audiences, and ideas—engaging both local and global communities—by providing world-renowned programming in theater, dance, music, opera, and film. Over the years BAM has showcased the work of emerging artists and icons such as Robert Wilson, Peter Brook, Pina Bausch, Merce Cunningham, and Philip Glass. BAM’s annual Next Wave Festival has grown to be the largest festival in North America dedicated to the contemporary performing arts.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Guide patrons throughout the VR installations
  • Provide patrons with instruction for how to properly use digital equipment or media including awareness of content and experience elements
  • Assist patrons properly put on, adjust, and remove equipment as well as sanitizing certain components in between patron use
  • Assist patrons with craft activities that include paint, ink, paper, drawing instruments, and other materials
  • Assist in protecting participant data
  • Maintain and restock activity materials
  • Maintain a waitlist if necessary
  • Assist BAM staff in maintaining a safe environment in and around installations
  • Supervision of space and equipment to avoid theft, loss, and avoidable damage
  • Relay technical or patron-related issues to BAM staff

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must attend mandatory participation in training for the proper use of equipment
    • Training scheduled for Thursday - Friday, Feb 21 - 22, 2019. Times TBD
  • Familiarity working with and caring for computers and digital equipment
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills with adults and children
  • Ability to work independently and in a small team environment
  • Ability to handle difficult situations and problem solve
  • Curriculum development experience
  • Willingness to wear a staff T-Shirt
  • Availability to work weekdays, evenings and weekends.
  • Experience working with diverse youth and student populations
  • Awareness of youth developmental stages

Preferred Qualifications

  • Teaching experience in the digital arts with young populations 
  • Foreign language skills

Pay Rate: $17 per hour.  Eligible for paid overtime.  Not eligible for benefits.
